Purpose of JAVA Letter

MSFT, INTC etc. are not stupid. They know that SUN will not give away JAVA. Their intent in writing "the letter" was more subtle and unspoken. Until now JAVA has benefitted from the impression that it is for everyone, the language of the internet masses, so to speak. This was very savvy marketing on the part of SUN. MSFT, INTC, etc. now recognize the threat that JAVA represents to them, and want to make it clear to the world that JAVA is for SUN first, and for everyone else second after licensing etc. JAVA is not a SUN led proletarian revolution deserving of the unflinching loyalty of the masses. SUN with JAVA is no better than MSFT with Windows.
At this point, that is the most MSFT and others can do to stem the tide of support for JAVA. It costs them nothing to do this, other than looking kinda stupid, and they hope to tarnish the JAVA for the masses image and expose it for what it is, namely, the PROPRIETARY language etc. of the future. IMHO this won't stop Java or even slow it much.
Still it is a profound recognition of the importance and potential of JAVA. I believe we SUN investors are in for a great ride in the upcoming quarters!
