My problem with Novell is that they are no longer innovative and seem to lack engineering talent. They were successful with Netware (on Drew Major's back) but have not done much since other than generate upgrades. They were never able to implement the SuperNOS idea (if they did NT would not exist today). They could not do anything with WP, whereas Corel was able to in a short period of time. Other than IPX, they have not created any industry standards (although NDS may beome one). These shortcomings may be due to management turmoil etc -- however I suspect they are tied to engineering talent.
Other company's were able to innovate even while under market pressure. Netscape is doing it and even Borland has done some amidst corporate upheavals.

This is not to say that Novell won't make money by transforming itself to a marketing machine (like MSFT). However, I don't believe they will succeed on innovation alone.
