Network Outlook: Bandwidth will boom Are you ready for photonic networking? By Bob Brown Network World, 3/11/98 Just a reminder. We've heard this before. True products are there to allow carriers to get by with existing fiber. But, with users wanting more bandwidth carrier nets will not be able to keep up....even with WDM. Look at one simply attribute. If all dial in (<56K) users move to 10M....that would require 200 times more bandwidth on the backbone not to mention interfaces. As for DSL...we're currently hearing about how even AM radio affects transmission. Cablemodems?...We're years away from this being a reality. These folks are still fighting over whether ATM or IP should be the underlying headend technology. IMHO we've got a long way to go before Mr. Browns vision becomes a reality. Gary (not Korn) with another biased opinion...
