Transferring info from one computer to another.

This is a very basic question, but if I buy a new laptop, is there a way I can transfer all the information from my desktop, including preloaded programs that came on the desktop, to my laptop with a cable? Or do I have to load all the information I want on the laptop by inserting CD programs and by inserting back up CDs that I have burned? Of course I understand that some program CDs are fixed so they cannot be loaded on more than one more computer.

Regards, Huey
