Samsung to Cut Chip Production Again

09/03 15:17

Samsung Electronics said yesterday that it will be cutting the production of its 16 and 64 megabit dynamic random access memory chips for the fourth consecutive month this month.

In addition to the week-long suspension in production at the memory plant in Kihung from this Sunday, the operation of part of the non-memory plant in Onyang will be shut down as well.

The production cut means that Samsung is taking a total of four weeks off in as many months which translates into a reduction of about 8 percent this year. Samsung made no comments on further production cuts for the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, Samsung officials said the production cut has led prices of the memory chips to increase by $2-10 or 25-50 percent. Hyundai Electronics Industries has also been cutting its production.
