It's the religious (religulous?) right at play. Telescopes are bringing in new information that confirms that the universe is over 14 billion years old. The Republican base believes that the world is only 6000 years old. So they'd rather fund the Creation Museum (dinosaur rides) than real science. Besides, the telescope might also discover evidence of global warming, just as earlier astronomical studies of Venus demonstrated the runaway greenhouse effect.
