Small Business and the 24x7 LAN

Data centers, with their mega-watt loads, hundreds of racks, high-density compute applications, Chunnel-sized networks, and 100X Library of Congress storage requirements tend to get a lot of media, analyst, and consultant coverage. But studies have shown that approximately two-thirds of all ITC (information technology & communications) power is consumed outside the data center. So today this column is focusing on the SMB space (small and medium business) where the LAN, along with network attached PCs running 24x7, can be the bane of the IT department’s existence, often a department of one, and the potential lead-in for energy savings. --
