Re -- Well, even better than that. A LOT of the Java base classes
are and will be written by those same companies.

Interoperability is the key, when a number of different companies (with their own shareholders to cater to -- sales/profits), do their own implementations. That is why there is a neutral standards body to resolve such conflict of interests (This interoperability BTW, is not as simple as it seems)

Emotionally, I feel, that Sunw should keep control. Practically, its unclear wether this approach would make JAVA successful. Furthermore, JAVA had MSFT as an ally. Should MSFT decide to actively push down java, this could very well change.
