GSM1x is being introduced in a couple of months by China Unicom. That'll be a big deployment. I don't know what else GSM providers will use in rural areas other than GSM1x. Even in cities, they might find it better than going to 3GSM [W-CDMA] in 2GHz.

Where GSM competes with CDMA networks, they'll have to do something sooner rather than later, or lose market share. In Europe they can probably hold the fort and mess around with 3GSM for a few years. They've got Ryanair and others which have cracked the air travel cartel and brought prices wayyyyyy down. At some stage, the equivalents in the cyberphone market will do the same. Then, demand will go nuts.

The competitive advantages of CDMA have barely been tapped so far.
