PRLN strategy has been based on tremendous respect for the knowledge that has been gained over thousands of years (which is why they bought the rights to the Chinese Library of Herbs) and the process that has probably led healer types interested in ameliorating suffering to effective plants and herbs with a minimum of side-effects. But natural substances, herbs and plants, also almost always contain varying amounts of toxic substances as well. The intent is to isolate the active and effective molecules of a useful substance which may then allow developing a more concentrated form of the effective ingredient while also possibly eliminating some toxic elements that previously have been part and parcel of the natural substance. Granted this has to be done carefully and with integrity. Toxic ingredients may not always be able to be eliminated or may play some kind of significant role in treatment, as some say is the case with chemotherapy. I hope, however, that approaches like chemotherapy can be replaced by much better and less debilitating treatments.
Chemotherapy, of course, is a dramatic example and biasing in favor of the argument I am making but as I said previously most natural curative substances also have, along with active therapeutic molecules, toxic elements as well. There should be many cases where isolating the active molecules and concentrating them, while parsing out toxic molecules, will create much improved treatment.
