Steve, once again it's a "zero-sum game."

Gas prices are well above $4/gallon. People are having to sacrifice to fill up their cars. That money has to be going somewhere.

Hence the "windfall profits tax." Take the money that the oil companies are hoarding thanks to high gas prices and return that money to the people (in the form of new government programs like cap-n-trade, universal health care, etc.).

Remember though that those damn right-wingers will blame us if gas prices rise again. Maybe they can explain where the money is going when prices rise. Maybe they would like to explain why they are defending the oil companies. While they do that, we'll just increase taxes to match that of rising prices until the oil companies figure out that they can't continue robbing the public.

Sound like a lesson that Ted would teach his students in a world where only government-sponsored education is legal?
