XAU has been weak on the open on a number of days. Maybe it is short term or positional traders taking profits - buy on the rumor and sell your gold stocks on the bad news. But, XAU has recoverd and set new highs a number of times.

One possible source of help - which Gold stocks are in the S&P 500? As the market tanks and gold stays even or goes up, all indexers will be forced to buy gold shares.
