The AP report you posted was a classic "rowback." They made him rewrite the original piece and include both sides, not just the ME side. A "rowback" is a way to correct a story without admitting your first one was incomplete or incorrect.

I can't prove it, but I bet it was the result of Editors complaining to the NY AP editors about the first one. I knew when the first one was published that the AP reporter was an Arab. This one confirmed it.
