I am just trying to point out that people are rational, and will adjust their behaviour to conditions at hand. You don't always need the government to get involved.

Fewer miles driven means less oil was used, which is what you have been talking about all along.

A lot of activities people do are optional, marginal. At some price level, some choices no longer make sense.

For example, some may drive 40 miles to Costco to save $10. But if it costs them $12 to get there and extra time, they may just buy the same item closer to their home.
