Just wishful speculation, but it could be one of the disk -makers looking to diversify their market. It would be a boon to either Quantum or Western Digital.

I don't think Syquest can survive on its own much longer. It has to be acquired by a larger suitor in order for it to compete with Iomega.

Removables are starting to become like commodities and market dominance is critical now for survival.
