BAGHDAD (AFP) - The alleged mastermind of Al-Qaeda operations in Iraq (news - web sites), Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, is believed to be in the city of Fallujah, which is under US marine siege, a senior coalition spokesman said.

"Zarqawi is believed to be in Fallujah or nearby," said Dan Senor.

He did not provide further details or say how close US forces were to capturing the man accused of being behind some of the deadliest suicide attacks in Iraq over the past year.

"I am not going to talk about specific plans for the hunt for Zarqawi but rest assured it is robust, but we belive that Fallujah right now is a hotbed for foreign fighters in Iraq, which would include Zarqawi."

Zarqawi has a 10 million dollar bounty on his head and the US army revealed a document in early February which it claimed was authored by him. It branded it as a "blueprint for terror" and fomenting a sectarian war in Iraq.

A voice message purported to be from Zarqawi released on the Internet on April 6 called for more attacks on the coalition and the Shiites, who were branded "allies of the Jews and Americans."
