I do not know what you base that conviction on, but as someone who has lived some years in Turkey, I can say that statement is incorrect.
First of all, "Turks who are Muslim" is 99+% of the population. So, your statement basically concerns the entire population of Turkey.
Turks they have a secular tradition and, frankly, most don't care much for how Islam tells them to live their daily lives - Most don't observe the daily prayers, they drink a lot of alcohol, beaches are alive with bikini-clad Turkish girls (and some topless tourists), etc.
Same indifference extends to non-Muslims. There are a lot of churches and synagogues throughout Turkey. You may have noticed that the Greek Orthodox church is to this day based in Istanbul, or that there is a Jewish minority in the western cities, descendants of families who ran from the persecution in Europe. There are Christian organizations, like "Jehovah's Witnesses" that go door to door, or put ads in the paper like "Have you read the Bible?".
There are many such examples of religious tolerance. In general, Turks just don't care that much about religion to discriminate non-Muslims and think of them in such terms as "infidel". There will always be the odd religious group who might use such words, but that is no different (and no more common) than the televangelist who argues against Harry Potter because the Bible says "Suffer not a witch to live" (true story). |
