Of course the US3's are in short supply and the orders are tremendous. I think that like the Itanium chip from Intel, the more complex chips have so many transistors that the yield per wafer is much less than the older, less powerful chips. US3's I would expect are much more expensive and also they take more time to produce in quantity. Also remember that SUNW is a fabless company. They go to Texas Instruments and other fabs to produce their chips. This feature may be good for Sun because they do not have the tremendous expense of re-tooling a new fab, but at the same time, they may be placed second along side all the other production of these fabs. So you know that they are "peddling" as fast as they can to produce the chips and will pay more to get more of them out "pronto"

Also, there is a possibility that they are having technical problems with the US3 working in the mid-range servers and high end servers. Who knows? They certainly are not coming out with news like that if it were true (which I do not believe to be true since these chips are backwards compatible with US2's).

I just think that they are getting out the message that they have an order imbalance with demand high and supply low.

The problem is that if they do not get this solved, it will impact forward revenues especially since they are competing with IBM's copper technology.
