Ore Reserves

The following is from "Mining Geology" by Hugh Exton McKinstry,
Professor of Geology, Harvard University.

Positive Ore or Ore Blocked Out. Ore exposed and sampled on four sides, i.e. by levels above and below and by raises or winzes at the ends of the block. This definition applies to veins; for wide orebodies the working must by supplemented by crosscuts.

Probable Ore. Ore exposed and sampled either on two or on three sides. (Authorities differ.)

Possible Ore. Ore exposed on only one side, its other dimensions being a matter of reasonable projection. some engineeers us an arbitrary extension of 50 to 100 feet. Others assume extension for half the exposed dimension.

Although these definitions are old, they still hold true for metal deposits today. Drill holes can be used for raises, winzes etc.

One water well, 100 feet deep is not enough to project proven reseverves. Four such wells on a 100 foot grid, with similar results would result in a block of proven ore 100' by 100' by 100' deep. And since this is a new type of deposit with no production experience, even that might be questionable.
