GLOBAL CHIP SALES CLIMB TO $11.80 BILLION IN SEPTEMBER AS STRONG 1997 GROWTH TREND CONTINUES

SAN JOSE --- Worldwide semiconductor sales climbed to $11.80 billion in September, the highest total in 19 months and a 14.7 percent improvement over September 1996 sales, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association's (SIA) Global Sales Report.

The September data shows continued strong growth for the second half of 1997 with sales increasing in three of the four major chip markets. September also marks the fifth consecutive month where 1997 sales surpassed 1996 sales.

The September results are in line with the 1997-2000 worldwide forecast we released last week, which calls for industry growth of 5.5 percent in 1997 and 16.8 percent in 1998, said SIA President George Scalise. The 1997 recovery continues to pick up steam, thanks to the continued expansion of the personal computer market, the growth of telecommunications, and surging interest in the Internet.

The Americas market continued its dramatic recovery from last year, showing a 20.1 percent increase in sales from September 1996. Year-to-year sales in the Asia-Pacific and European markets also soared 22.4 percent and 15.7 percent, respectively. Japan's growth was nominal, 1.3 percent higher than September 1996.

Worldwide, September sales increased $190 million, or 1.6 percent, from August's sales of $10.61 billion. Monthly sales increased 4.4 percent in Europe, 3.9 percent in Asia-Pacific and 1.9 percent in the Americas market, but declined 2.9 percent in Japan. Once again, the Americas market lead in sales with $3.93 billion, or 33 percent of global sales. Japan had the second highest sales, $2.81 billion.

Data for the Global Sales Report was collected by World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), an organization of 70 companies. The WSTS also prepares semiannual forecasts for the chip industry and issues monthly reports on sales by products and regions.
