As for (1) Opportunity cost, I don't think my broker has a minimum margin, or at least not that has impacted my trading at all.

As for (2) shorting to zero, I'm currently short something that's now at half a penny, and I have no intention of covering to trigger a large taxable gain -- the commission alone would cost many times more than the stock's worth. I also had a short disappear from my account a couple of months ago (I do show a buy with no price and no commission in my account activity). I have to ask my broker exactly what happened. It was a bankrupt POS that was at pennies at most last I had checked. That may have been a real short to zero. I guess I have to find out definitively before filing my taxes for last year...

I had a whole bunch of shorts to zero that expired worthless today (and usually have some every month), but that's the options market, a whole other story...
