nbfm - The move, coupled with the government’s earlier decision to ban subsidies on handsets, is an attempt to alleviate the weight on the country's trade balance.

Anyone know the Korean/US trade balance/numbers?

7. April's trade surplus registered $225 million, a steep decrease from the $2.4 billion surplus recorded one year ago. According to Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy (MOCIE) officials, a continued strong rise in import demand combined with an estimated $500 million export loss,
(due to auto strikes), an outbreak of hoof-and-mouth
disease, and lost production because of the National
Assembly elections, caused the sharply lower trade surplus. First quarter exports totaled $39.5 billion, while imports totaled $38.8 billion. MOCIE officials attributed the first-quarter import surge to climbing oil and raw materials prices as well as an increase in facilities investments by domestic firms and double-digit growth in private consumption. The ROKG expects an increased trade
surplus in the coming months due to an anticipated drop in crude oil prices as opec members boost production.
