From Briefing>COM" there are also a couple of earnings warnings this morning. They aren't particularly significant in themselves, but they are a reminder that earnings warning season is approaching. Budget Group (BG), the car rental company, is warning that it will report a substantial loss, and Planar Systems (PLNR), a maker of electronic display products, is warning that earnings will be substantially below prior expectations. Earnings warnings typically arise as the calendar quarter draws to a close, and companies recognize that there will be an earnings shortfall. This is the middle of the quarter, and thus only companies that have a really big problem are likely to have clear signs of that now. In early December, after companies have both October and November internal financials, is when earnings warnings will be more prevalent. These warnings today simply serve as a reminder that earnings warnings season is not all that far away. "
