Ali,

"This weekend I was at Best Buy to look at computer shelves. Surprisingly, there were ONLY 2 Athlon desktop machines, vs. 25-30 Intel-based models. And I remember other times when they were 50/50 at least. Can someone tell me where those 21.2% machines are gone?"

I think that this is a very serious issue. *Everyone* should know by now that AMD CPUs are by far more popular in the hobbyist market, yet mainly Intel CPUs get promoted. I believe that we are seeing the results of some very strong marketing efforts by Intel. Intel *cannot* afford to have another quarter where they have to report shrinking sales while AMD's sales are growing. So I think Intel is doing EVERYTHING to move its inventory.

Can you say Godfather deals?

But of course, when the only PCs which are offered/promoted are rather unattractive computers (= Intel PCs due to their bad price/performance relationship), the sales numbers will remain poor.

(In my eyes this is also ONE of the reasons of the currently poor office PC sales. As long as only Celeron or PIII PCs are offered - or P4s which are quite unsuited for office applications - no one will feel the inspiration to buy.)

Anyway, it is definitely not a good sign!

Peter
