First thing I would do is see if your BIOS is current. Also make sure there aren't any funky settings on devices like network adapters that can wake up the system.

Also, regarding system restore, that does not add/remove user data. It's mostly registry, drivers, settings, etc. To be clear, I'm talking about restoring the system to a recent restore point, not doing an OS repair from CD.

Lastly, in my experience, XP-Home just loves to go comatose for no reason, especially when it's idle.
