Obviously, I share your confusion over market share. Even worse than the complications created by donated hardware are the complications created by the massive "grey market" in Apple hardware. Oddly enough, the Macs ease-of-use and reliability are mainly resposible for this "grey market." (This kind of market is virtually non-existant in the PC world). Users who acquire "grey market" machines don't have access to the usual manufacturer help desks.

BTW, a partcularly lucrative source of these machines is the education market. Apparently, some less-than-reputable folks from overseas have represented themselves to Apple as educators, purchased discounted computers, then resold them well above cost (but still below retail) through bulletin boards and fanzines back here in the U.S..

My best guess is that Apple's numbers are probably fairly accurate. Market share for the Mac is between 10% and 12%. This is about three or four times higher than typical press figures.
