Chip-equipment makers led the tech sector higher Wednesday morning as the broader market rose on a private-sector jobs report showing unexpected growth in July. The Nasdaq Composite Index recently was up 0.9% at 2340, while the Morgan Stanley High Tech 35 Index gained 0.3%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index added 1.3% as the semiconductor equipment manufacturers advanced, following what some analysts saw as strong suggestions from Lam Research Corp. (LRCX) of stronger demand later in the year. "Lam Research is trying to call the third quarter the bottom, but we think there is too much fear on end market weakness for investors to buy into this scenario without better industry fundamentals," analyst Ben Pang of Caris & Company told clients in a research note. But Wall Street took an upbeat look at the sector pushing Lam Research shares up 9%. Meanwhile, Novellus Systems Inc. (NVLS) added 4%, Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT) advanced 1.9% and KLA-Tencor Corp. (KLAC) added 2.8%.
