Right-o, it's a return to the 1920s. IMO the rightwing radicals do not care if we go backwards as long as their wealth and that of their families and friends resemble those of the robber barons. They have images of 'cottages' in the Hamptons maintained by the working poor to whom they do not have to pay a decent wage or provide decent working conditions.

We are, at any rate, back to the wage gaps of the 1920s and Bush is trying to widen the gap even more by every means possible:

- killing Medicare, Medicaid
- cementing the tax cuts to the ultra wealthy
- killing SS
- killing liability for corporations (tort 'reform') while cementing liability for individuals (bankruptcy 'reform')
- transfer of even more wealth from individuals to corporations (Medicare drug bill, war)

He thinks he can do this by bankrupting the US Treasury, destabilizing the country to the point where everyone will be anything out of sheer fear. He saw the tremendous effect of fear after 911 and he's looking for something else just as destabilizing. Bankrupting the country might just do it.

Who knows? Maybe the Schiavo case has opened the eyes of even some Republicans to the potential power of the government to control every aspect of our lives down to the most intimate and heart wrenching decisions.
