"With a piston-engined plane, all of the engines need to be taken out and completely rebuilt after 20,000 hours of use or less."

It is all about pushing the technology. For airliners, piston engines had to be pushed to the max. That made them relatively fragile. While, with jet engines, it didn't take much to get close to the speed of sound. Which did push the technology and didn't buy all that much. So they aren't stressed nearly as much.
