Gary, Only at the recent Analyst's meeting did Intel reveal they intend to play in all segments of the PCs. This includes the sub $1000
or zero segment. This is just the begining of the paradigm shift, or as Andy Grove would say an inflection point. What I am referring to is the shift to PC prices from $2000 to $1000. This is a technology inflection point but a market inflection point.

Intel repeatedely denied that this segment would take off, and said that this would be second PCs, but not purchases by new consumers.

I am surprised they did not predict it. When the first PCs were built Intel missed out, Intel decided not to build the box, instead focussed only on the chips (drams and uPs). Gordon Moore's is quoted as saying the major application would be for storing recipes etc. and did not see such a big market.

Compaq was the only one among the major players to correctly predict this shift and target it.

Due to AMD's yield problems, Intel is definitely in the game. You might argue that the majority of the zero segment PCs may have Intel inside, and therefore they have not missed it. This is true but it has hurt their business model, and will continue to do so, until Merced is ready for the very high end.
