** SIEMENS AG is about to expand into the data networking business
by creating a new American unit, buying two private U.S.
companies, investing in another company and hiring a senior
executive from IBM CORP., the New York Times reported, citing
executives close to the company's planning. Europe's manufacturing
giant is also in preliminary talks with 3COM CORP. (COMS: 25-1/16,
+ 1/2) about paying $1.2 billion for the 3Com unit that sells
networking equipment to phone companies, the executives told the
newspaper. Siemens is expected to announce Monday that it has
agreed to buy data networking firms Westford, Mass.-based Castle
Networks Inc. for $300 million cash and Littleton, Mass.-based
Argon Networks for $240 million cash, the executives told the New
