IJ,

I find it incredible that Venter would really state his intention to buy a publicly held chemistry company if he was really serious about doing so. There aren't that many chemistry companies around and so any rumors would serve to cause a run-up before an announcement and so decrease the attractiveness of any offer they made. It may indicate they are looking at privately held companies instead.

Building a chemistry company is tough - good medicinal chemists are apparently like gold. It's an area where many biotechs are apparently weak, except for a handful like VRTX, MLNM and NRGN.

Personally I don't understand why CRA wouldn't go the much easier Mab route first if they really want to be a products company.
