Yes, I am aware of all those points, also that there were strong arguments to abolish slavery when the union was formed. Politically it was not expedient because several of the Christian churches in several of the states (among them, Virginia I believe) threatened to remain independent unless allowed to continue the practice of slavery.

The government also didn't fear American's wrath during the events leading up to the Whiskey Rebellion.
