INTC--Intel Expands Technology Investment in Growing Applied Computing Market Segment
Support Extended for Faster Intel® Pentium® III Processors, Chipsets and New Scalable Performance Board Design
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2000-- Intel Corporation today expanded its investment of fast processors, chipsets and development kits in the rapidly growing applied computing market segment, extending its availability of high-performance computing technology to applications such as Internet infrastructure and networked equipment.

Intel's new offerings include two of its fastest Pentium® III processors, the latest complementary chipsets and a new scalable performance board development kit.

By expanding the life-cycle and technical support for these processors, Intel makes it practical for makers of applied-computing equipment to take advantage of this high-performance technology. In addition, Intel enhances availability of design tools, development platforms, support for real-time operating systems and complete platform solutions through third-party vendors, including its Applied Computing Platform Provider program members.

Specifically, Intel has extended support for the Intel® Pentium® III processors at 850 MHz and 866 MHz and the Intel® 815 and 815E chipsets, and is introducing the Intel® 815E Scalable Performance Board Development Kit.

These products are members of the Intel® Internet Exchange(TM) Architecture (IXA), an end-to-end line of high-performance, flexible and scalable hardware and software building blocks enabling faster development, more cost-effective deployment, and easy upgradability of Internet infrastructure, data storage, and networking and communications systems. The application processors announced today extend the benefits of standard building blocks to equipment providing new service applications to the Internet infrastructure, such as security and voice over Internet protocol.

``In virtually every industry, product designers are learning how to harness the capabilities of our latest computer technology, particularly the advanced processors,'' said Joe Jensen, general manager for Intel's Embedded Intel Architecture Division. ``We continue to expand our line of products in response to the rapidly increasing demands of applied computing equipment developers. The line now ranges from the classic Pentium® processors to the Celeron(TM) processors to our newest Pentium III processors and related technology.''

Processors Offer Speed Advantages and Chipsets Increase Versatility

The performance of the Intel Pentium III processors at 850 MHz and 866 MHz with a 133 MHz processor side bus is ideal for Internet infrastructure applications, such as security, virtual private networks and firewalls, which all require very high data throughput.

The Intel 815 and 815E chipsets are versatile components, possessing performance, stability and reliability for a wide range of applied computing applications. For example, both chipsets incorporate advanced integrated graphics features, helping to keep materials costs low for next-generation imaging and terminal applications. The chipset's enhanced I/O performance and faster hard-disk-drive access qualify them for next-generation communications applications.

Scalable Performance Board Provides Flexible Design Platform

Basing their designs on the Intel 815E Scalable Performance Board Development Kit, equipment designers can create solutions to satisfy a multitude of application requirements at various performance and price points using one platform. The scalable performance board combines processor, chipset and associated components on an evaluation board. The kit also includes complete technical documentation and demonstration software.
