So either we pay penance for those sins, or figure out a way to get the goose back on track in the short run and then commit to a long term solution that will make john happy.

I think I read that we have more oil in the ground than we have yet used, but trillions of barrels are in shale. But then much of that needs to be reserved for future plastics and other materials. IMO nuclear fission is the most viable near term solution, that with solar, wind, and hydro (to include ocean waves) should hold us up till we can develop nuclear fusion, not cold fusion. But if not there is always horses.
