One company which has been rumored as a takeover for months has been
Ventritex. This company makes implantable defibrillators. The company
most in need of a product to compete is St. Jude Medical. The rumor
from the inside is that management at St. Jude wants to compete with
Medtronic, and to really become a major player, a defibrillator is
mandatory to add to there line. Ventritex has been hit hard, falling
from the 40's (currently at about 18). Look to buy for a short term
pop to low 20's even if no deal comes through before the end of the
year. The FDA has delayed approval of their latest version, so I
suspect management at Ventritex is becoming antsy to cash in before
Medtronic and the other big player, Guidant, wipes them out.
