PowerLink Costs

Cost is $34.95 per month flat rate for unlimited access plus a one-time $50 installation fee. For the one-time charge they send someone out to install a cable outlet by your PC (if you don't already have one), test and verify you have adequate signal strength on the cable, and then send another technician out who installs the cable modem and associated software on your PC. Considering the services rendered $50 is a bargain. Most such fees cover little more than the cost of flipping a switch at the head office.

As I mentioned, this is still a one-way cable modem in my area. The uplink is via phone modem with the downlink via cable. In the event that the cable is down (which happens from time to time in lightning-prone South Florida) you can use an alternate dialup number and fallback to regular 28,8 service via the phone modem. Two-way cable service is currently available in some areas (Buffalo, NY is one) for $39.95 per month. This is incredible because if you are currently paying for an extra phone line to support your ISP dialup, the two way cable will actually be cheaper than your current setup in addition to blowing it away from a performance standpoint.

If my experience is indicative of the aggressiveness of cable companies in rolling out this type of service I would not want to be an ISP (or a holder of ISP stock) over the next couple of years.
