Yea, I remember Mr. Ovshinsky and solar cells. I also read an article on "Physics Today" in the early 90's which said the cost for solar energy was only 50% higher than the some commercial large-scale power plants (oil, coal, nuclear?) and expected a price cross-over point in 10-15 years. I guess National Science Foundation or Dept. of Energy should fund this kind of research.

As for the ion implant equipments, I think the beam uniformity spec and wafer sizes will drive chip companies to buy new machines. Semiconductor fabs to be built around 2000 should be fully 300mm compatible. Varian's "SHC-80 system is the only implanter in the world capable of processing both 200mm and 300mm wafers", see
