The last fantasy book I read was _The Lions of Al-Rassan_ by Guy Gavriel Kay, although I don't know if you could really call it fantasy since there was no magic involved at all.

The story was set in 13th century Spain when three major religions coexisted in the same Iberian peninsula. The three faiths were the Jaddites (Christians), the Kindath (Jews), and Asharites (Muslims). The peninsula is on the verge of war when fate links together the fortunes of a Jaddite warrior (El-Cid), a female Kindath physician, and an Asharite poet. They become torn between the friendships developed with each other, and the loyalties to their own cultures.

What's great about Kay is how he conveys the full force of human passions - love, heartbreak, loyalty, war, destiny...

He's basically the only fantasy author I read.
