Redback Networks is making greenbacks by
providing networking products to telecom
companies such as GTE and to Internet
service providers such as MCI WorldCom's
UUNET subsidiary. The company's
Subscriber Management Systems (SMS)
connect and manage large numbers of
subscribers so companies can deploy
high-speed broadband access to the Internet
and corporate intranets. Its SMS 1000
supports up to 4,000 subscribers, while the
SMS 500 system supports up to 1,000
subscribers. Redback sells its products
directly and through distributors and VARs.
About 15% of sales are outside the US.
Chairman Pierre Lamond, a National
Semiconductor founder and a partner at
Sequoia Capital, owns nearly 30% of the
company.
