OK, please explain to me just why I'm evil for owning one? Why do you generalize about the MPG? What's wrong with taking my (2WD) Blazer on some of the most interesting mining roads(legal ones only) in the Rocky Mountains? Room to carry the snow board of hitch hikers in Rocky National Park for the June season below Independence Pass.
Drop the tailgate and grab a pick-nick lunch on a dirt road above Cripple Creek as the Aspens quake and show off their finest fall colors, guess we've been sinning.
It's big enough to cruise all day at 75 to get to Yellowstone and do it on sips from the large gas tank. With the split-fire spark plugs and 140k miles it still passes emissions testing with 35-50% of max. allowable. With the chains, I can get more stuck in the snow than anyone would desire. The water crossing on the back raod to Leadville used up all the ground clearance & the new mud & snow tires are all that saved me some nasty time with a come-along & shovel.
The space in back allows a safe place to hang the fly rod, the metal detector & room for a real spare tire, 2 gallons of gas, 2 gallons of water....oh yes, and that old set of clubs.

82 S-10 Blazer 2WD small V-6 5 speed @ 45-55 mph 24-27mpg!
It's really more like a 2 door rear wheel drive station wagon.

Next time a 4WD.
