I am new to this subject- but it seems that the opportunities are as follows:
there are existing fibre optic based networks who capacity is being and needs to enhanced;
there will be the optical based networks - requiring presumably optical repeaters and routers;
and there will be optical based Wide Area Broadband Networks which require switching capability to carry voice, video and data.
Different companies (start ups)will try dominate different space- my guess is they will have to be
acquisition targets because the Telcos, CLECS,ISP's will seek single source integrated seamless solutions. The start ups can not provide those- except in the form of niche products.

Wher does Optical Networks fit into all this??
