I believe that the important thing we have to consider here is that this last piece of the communication puzzle is going to undergo an evolution, not a revolution. Currently, most households don't even have a 28.8 modem. Telcos realize these that is why they're trying to phase in the technologies involved.

ISDN, in my opinion, has a chance to be mainstream if they can lower the costs significantly. This will allow people like us who use the internet to gather as much information as we can with the least amount of waiting time. Its true, the bigger bandwidths will make it possible for video applications to become reality but majority of people will still use the Internet for text-based information. And for this 4X the speed of 28.8 is good enough. We have to think as telcos, how do we sell these technologies, what are the pricing points going to be?

After ISDN, I would appreciate if we can discuss the timing considerations, when the technologies will be practical to deploy? ADSL is great, but the companies selling these are already selling at 1998 expected revenues. Fiber optics is probably selling at year 2000 projections.

Let's itemize the different phases, and the companies involved.
