Kurt: Fonar Corporation received FDA approval for its MRI Scanner,
the Quad 12000 on November 16th, 1995. The Quad 12000 is the only
high-field open MRI available on the market. The company expects its
new product to have enormous appeal in the medical community.
I did a little digging and found out some information. Most of
Fonar's revenue has been generated by patent infringements. Hitachi
settled with Fonar for an undisclosed sum of money. In May of '95, a
jury found GE liable for patent infringement and was ordered to pay
Fonar 100 million. GE appealed and the judge upheld one of the two
Fonar patents. GE was ordered to pay in excess of $62 million. Fonar
settled another patent infringement case with Philips Medical Systems.
3 months ended March 31st, 1996, Fonar reported a profit of .04/share
compared to a loss of .02/share for '95.
The average volume over the last 15 days has been b/t 150,000-
200,000. Volume spiked up dramatically today with almost 1/2 million
shares traded. Fonar jumped up to $3 dollars a share right b/f the
bell and then closed at 2 7/8.
I'm extremely excited about this one for numerous reasons. Fonar is starting to see a profit, one thing it hasn't done since '94.
The patent on their MRI machine is HUGE for the company. As you can
tell, numerous corporations throughout the country have tried to
develop a machine like Fonars. That is why the patent information is
such a big deal. Protects them from the copy cats! Fonar has a
wonderful home page at.....www.fonar.com/index.html.....Another reason
I feel this is a HUGE development is the costs associated with the
machine. It was stated in the press release that a typical mammogram
would cost anywhere from $80-$115. A typical X-Ray mammogram today
costs anywhere b/t $700-$1200. That is an enormous reduction in per
patient cost. I assume the insurance agencies will absolutely LOVE
this aspect of the machine. As we all know, rising health care costs
is a major issue in the political forum.
I see Fonar(FONR) making a big run this week on this positive
news release. It looks like $4 is the breakout price, so if it climbs
above that, I believe we'll all be in for a nice little ride........
