Just happened to be at the computer store today and I noticed that
USR 33.6 Modems now carry a sticker saying future upgradable to 56k.
I guess this indicates 56k will be a firmware upgrade. While
that is good for us who own upgradable USR modems, it is not so good for USR's recurring revenue stream as I suspect the upgrade might be free.
