Tests scheduled for Aikman

11/02/99

By Jean-Jacques Taylor / The Dallas Morning News

Quarterback Troy Aikman said he will take an MRI on Tuesday to ensure he sustained no neurological damage after being knocked out of Sunday's game for one series.

"We want to see if there have been any changes from previous tests I have taken," Aikman said.

Aikman absorbed a helmet-to-helmet it by Indianapolis cornerback Jeff Burris in the fourth quarter. Aikman missed a series as he used smelling salts to shake the grogginess he felt.

He continued to have headaches on Monday.

Most helmet-to-helmet hits cause concussions such as the one cornerback Deion Sanders sustained a week ago against Washington.

Attacking Sanders

The Colts directed six passes at cornerback Deion Sanders, one less than he had seen all season.

The Colts also had success, completing four passes for 84 yards and two penalties - defensive holding and a 15-yard facemask.

Marvin Harrison's 40-yard completion was the longest since Jacksonville's Keenan McCardell caught a 39-yard pass against Sanders in 1997.

Injury report

Safety Kenny Wheaton had a MRI to determine the severity of his sprained right knee.

The results will not be known until Tuesday.

Cornerback Kevin Mathis (hamstring) and safety George Teague (neck) are listed as questionable on the Cowboys' injury report.

Receiver Michael Irvin will have additional tests this week to determine whether the swelling of his spinal column has reduced. Trainer Jim Maurer said the results will not be known until Thursday or Friday.
