AOL and SUN

Let's see, SUN developed OAK for cable settop boxes - this latter became JAVA.

AOL has a new development ideal - AOL Anywhere (cell phones, pagers, PDAs, PC/Macs and oh yeah...settop boxes). Look out, here comes AOL TV!

SUN has an ace in the hole named NETSCAPE. They already have developed a thin-client which they called a browser. They also developed something called WebTop (a browser which replaces your desktop) based on Java. If SUN were to take this WebTop component and work it into a settop box, meld it with @Home....we'd have the first step into a new world no?

We already use web-based applications (email, calendaring/scheduling, messaging). Expanding that to "office" type applications will not be hard once the infrastructure problems have been worked out. I say this because the catalyst for this move will not be the individual consumer but small businesses looking to extend their capabilities with less impact on their bottom line.
