SUBMARINE FIBER OPTICS
China-US Cable Network to Begin Operations on Monday Forty-five telecommunications carriers from around the world will kick off Monday the operations of a vast underwater cable network linking China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and the United States, KDD Corp. KDD, AT&T Corp. of the United States, and China Telecom are among the carriers. The 20,000-km fiber optic cable, called the China-US Cable Network, traverses the Pacific Ocean from Chiba Prefecture in Japan to the U.S. west coast city of Bandon, after linking China, South Korea, Taiwan and Guam with Japan. The cable will provide the telecom carriers with an additional combined capacity of 80 Gbps. They are currently expanding the overall capacity of the network by adding another 10,000-km cable linking Guam with the US west coast city of San Luis Obispo, and then with Bandon. In addition, KDD is building the Japan-US Cable, another underwater fiber optic cable linking Japan and the US, with the project expected to be completed by the year-end. |
