Let, The MediaOne deal and Open cable systems are just a sign of things to come. In the Summer of 2000, settop boxes will hit the retail shelves. They all need to use open systems. If you buy a Pioneer/Philips/Sony, or a GI/SFA box, they will need to work in all cable environments. The encription part will be a plug-in.

Cable Systems have a lot of debt. They need to get the settops off their balance sheets. Malone has been preaching this for a couple years. The boxes that sit on top of TVs will be the consumers choice, Not the MOS's. Combo boxes, like DVD/Digital Cable or Replay/Cable box will make a lot of sense.

As for Intel, yes, they would like to own C-Cube. So would many others. C-Cube doesn't need the cash, and their largest asset is their employees. No fab, or other physical asset. The only way to buy C-Cube is a friendly deal. C-Cube is not interested.
