Memory Chip Prices Soar Sharply

10/19 16:42

The prices of memory semiconductors have begun to soar sharply this month.

According to related business concerns, prices of 64M DRAM chips have maintained a strong trend this month while those of some 16M DRAM goods rose by more than 40 percent compared with the first half of this year.

The 64M DRAMs for PC-100 products, which account for 60 to 70 percent of entire exports, were priced at $9.61 to $10.40 per unit Oct. 9 from $9.06 to $10.14 on Oct. 7.

The 16M DRAMs have also begun to see a rise in prices, affected by the growing move to decrease production by European and Japanese makers as well as domestic firms.

In addition, the ongoing talks for a joint-venture firm between Hyundai Electronics & Industries and LG Semicon is expected to expedite the trend toward a world-wide decline in supply.

Market watchers said the nation should take advantage of this precious chance to contend with the economic slowdown under the IMF financial control program, buoyed by the rise in prices of the chips, Korea's largest export item.

Industry sources have asserted that the semiconductor business around the world has begun to recover.
